Everyone Can't Be in Your Front Row
Life is a theater - invite your audience carefully. Not everyone is spiritually healthy and mature enough to have a front row seat in our lives. There are some people in your life that need to be loved from a distance.
It's amazing what you can accomplish when you let go, or at least minimize your time with draining negative, incompatible, not-going-anywhere relationships/friendships/fellowships!
Observe the relationships around you. Pay attention to: Which ones lift and which ones lean? Which ones encourage and which ones discourage? Which ones are on a path of growth uphill and which ones are going downhill?
When you leave certain people, do you feel better or feel worse? Which ones always have drama or don't really understand, know and appreciate you and the gift that lies within you? When you seek growth, peace of mind, love and truth, the easier it will become for you to decide who gets to sit in the FRONT ROW and who should be moved to the balcony of your life.
You cannot change the people around you...but you can change the people you are around! Pray for godly wisdom and discernment and choose wisely the people who sit in the front row of your life.

I am finding lately that this is the hardest thing to do in my life!

Thought Provoker Thursday~

Last night I was at a local Barrio Youth Slam which left me a little unsettled and uplifted at the same time. For this I need to speak on something that really irks me. Women, women that have children and allow their children to be subjected to verbal, mental and physical abuse. This young man (we'll call him Adrian) no older than 15 was up there free styling his poem, speaking of his Mama getting beat down by her boyfriend. Adrian was in tears, big crocodile tears. This was really hard for him, but very liberating all the same. Now I can empathize with Adrian, although the abuse for me was not physical but verbal it still cuts deep. My now deceased Step-Father would always use derogatory words that really made me feel ugly inside/out. It was only until he took his own life that I felt I had to let go of my animosity and forgive him. I really don't think my Mama knew then just how deep it was.

Adrian has hope though, through youth activities like the Barrio Youth Slam at Su Teatro and community involvement. He doesn't know this, but he is my inspiration. I really want to ask every single person out there (especially women) to just be AWARE of how your children are being treated. If some one can not love and respect your foundation, get out...please. Children are precious and beautiful, they are our future. When I die I do not give a damn what material objects I am left with, what position I held, how big my house was...the most important accomplishment I want to hold is raising a loving and caring child.

My daughter Gianna (10 yrs old), was the youngest among this crowd of High School kids last night at the Barrio Youth Slam and when she went up to the open mic...oh man she made me so proud. This is my reward, she is my reward for a life well lived. Children if you read this and need some one, email me. I mean it!

Speak your your mind.

Wordsmith Wednesday~

Teach y'all women how to hold the family down in case something happens to their fathers
Protect the children, grab revolvers
The women play important part of our life force
So what we fight for, my heart goes to you beautiful wife in war
Uh, And listen more talk less
Watch all and trust none, demand your respect
And be ready to die for what you believe in
And ride all the time not just when convenient
Justice and freedom, wisdom and understanding
We the lost children of Israel in this western world region
You ain't a man you a coward if you cant support the girl you put a seed in
Strong rule the weak, but the wise rule the strong
It's more to a war than just getting it on
Conceal your form, and cover your tracks
Stay prepared I don't care if no one's spared

Wordsmith Wednesday~

Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
And cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange
A walk on part in the war,
For a lead role in a cage?

Prensenting The Last Pharaoh of Egypt...Cleopatra VII~

Gritty Velvet will be releasing the late and great Cleopatra t-shirt this Saturday, April 17 at Guerrilla Garden warehouse for the highly anticipated Firelily bash Electric Punanny.  This is not just a shirt, its an art form that has many messages. It represents taking risks and standing on your own such as Cleopatra did. The ankh (Egyptian hieroglyph) in her hair symbolizes the union of man and woman, the key of life. It also represents regeneration of spirit; a fresh start, a new beginning. This is a shirt of evolution.

Here is the initial sketch of Cleopatra. I drew her eyes and eyebrows and we began from there; mi amorcito Filthe  helped me to perfect her beautiful face & together we created her. After listening to Erykah Badu's latest album New Amerykah pt. 2 Return of the Ankh just recently I felt it necessary to include the ankh into the drawing, it was as if the stars were aligned right at the correct moment.

Here is the finished product...Enjoy!

There is only one person who is capable to set limits to your growth: it is YOU

Your life does not change when your boss changes, when your friends change, when your parents change, when your partner changes, when your company changes.
Your life changes when YOU change, when you go beyond your limiting beliefs, when you realize that you are the only one responsible for your life.

The most important relationship you can have is the one you have with yourself' - Author unknown -

A miracle~

The child must know that he is a miracle, that since the beginning of the world, there hasn't been, and until the end of the world there will not be another child like him ~ Pablo Casals 1876-1973

I heard this song a couple years ago and it rocked then; however just recently stumbled upon this remix by DJ Sam La More and found it to be equally amazing! I am usually not fond of electro-techno remixes but this one is pretty easy on the ears and tickling to the feet. Enjoy!

The Student's Prayer~

"Don't impose on me what you know,
I want to explore the unknown
And be the source of my own discoveries.
Let the known be my liberation, not my slavery.
The world of your truth can be my limitation;
Your wisdom my negation.
Don't instruct me; let's walk together.
Let my riches begin where yours end.
Show me so that I can stand
On your shoulders.
Reveal yourself so that I can be
Something different.
You believe that every human being
Can love and create.
I understand then, your fear
When I ask you to live according to your wisdom.
You will not know who I am
By listening to yourself.
Don't instruct me; let me be.
Your failure is that I be identical to you."

I've learned, and will continue to each day~

I've learned.... That just one person saying to me, "You've made my day!" makes my day.

I've learned.... That the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.

I've learned.... That when you're in love, it shows.

I've learned.... That having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.

I've learned.... That sometimes being kind is more important than being right.

I've learned.... That you should never say no to a gift from a child.

I've learned.... That I can always pray for someone when I don't have the strength to help him in some other way.

I've learned.... That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.

I've learned.... That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.

I've learned.... That simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult.

I've learned.... That life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

I've learned.... That we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for.

I've learned.... That money doesn't buy class or happiness.

I've learned.... That it's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.

I've learned... That under everyone's hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.

I've learned... That I give way too much of myself and my heart and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I've learned.... That to ignore the facts does not change the facts.

I've learned.... That when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.

I've learned.... That love, not time, heals all wounds.

I've learned.... That the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am.

I've learned.... That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.

I've learned.... That there's nothing sweeter than sleeping with your child and feeling their breath on your cheeks.

I've learned.... That no one is perfect until you fall in love with them.

I've learned.... That life is tough, but I'm tougher.

I've learned.... That opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss. BTW "Killing time, Murders opportunity"

I've learned.... That when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

I've learned.... That giving my Father half my liver was the easiest & most painful decision of my life, but worth it.

I've learned.... That one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them.

I've learned.... That a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

I've learned.... That everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it.

I've learned ... That it is best to give advice in only two circumstances; when it is requested and when it is a life threatening situation.

I've learned.... That the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.

Happy Birthday Lady May~

There's snowflakes in the sky
And geese are flying high
But it's April in my heart again
The devil got his due
Love's holiday is through
Love and I have made a happy start again
Though leaves lie on the ground
The world just turned around
It isn't Fall at all you see
It's Spring that I have found
There's frost in Central Park
At five it's almost dark
What's the difference
When you've heard love's sweet amend
There's snowflakes in the sky
And geese are flying high
But there's April in my heart again
